This adrenalin-fuelled mini-break is great for thrill-seekers who don’t have stacks of time on their hands. You’ll spend two days on the Colorado River in the challenging Westwater Canyon, tackling whitewater rapids, swimming and camping for a night on a secluded beach. And – if there’s time – you’ll also get to explore the area by foot, too.
This part of the USA is home to some seriously striking scenery. Red rock canyons are carved deep into the landscape, rock spires twist upwards like stalagmites, and natural arches provide perfect frames for blue skies and a seemingly never-ending desert landscape. Then there’s the native American rock art that was etched into rock surfaces 600 years ago. All in all it makes for a hugely compelling experience and the perfect place to spend quality time outdoors.
Westwater Canyon is a mecca for whitewater enthusiasts, so it’s little surprise that it’s these stretches of the river that make up the real highlights of this mini tour. Plunge through Little Hummer, Last Chance Rapid and Funnel Falls – and if you master those, you’ll be ready for anything. And that includes the notorious Skull Rapid. Aside from thrills of the watery variety, you’ll also get to peek into the past when you see ancient rock art etched into the landscape at Little Dolores Canyon.
Maximum group sizes are 25, although the average is between 10 and 15. The maximum number of people to an oarboat is 5. This two-day tour is an introduction to whitewater rafting, and is designed for beginners who would like a challenge. Children aged 10 and above are welcome.
