Wye Valley Walk

Wye Valley Walk

On this Wye Valley Walk, you follow the River Wye from the sea at Chepstow to its source in Plynimon. As well as covering 136 miles on foot you’ll have plenty of time to take in places like Hay-on-Wye, Symonds Yat and Builth Wells along the way. Just make sure you’ve got a pair of well-fitting walking boots!

The Wye Valley has been designated as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty – and for good reason. Not only is it hugged in a beautiful landscape of rolling meadows, gentle hills and woodland carpeted with bluebells during Spring, it’s also home to some spectacular scenery of the manmade variety including Tintern Abbey and Chepstow Castle. The area makes the journey across the borderland of England and Wales – a perilous trip during the 12th and 13th centuries but one that’s now considered safe. Unless you’re an England rugby fan on your way to a match in Wales.

Nature-lovers will be in their element whilst on this Wye Valley Walk! Look out for kingfishers and otters as you amble alongside the River Wye, and see majestic Red Kites soaring overhead at Gigrin Farm near Rhayader. There’s also plenty for history buffs, too. On your first day, you can tick off the 11th-century Chepstow Castle – a Norman fortress that overlooks the banks of the river. And then there’s the likes of Goodrich Castle and Hereford Cathedral that both lie close to the Welsh border. And for those that need a little respite from walking and sightseeing, there are plenty of places to relax for a bite to eat or enjoy a well-earned pint en-route.

Two weeks of solid walking isn’t everyone’s cup of tea, so it’s fair to say you should be a pretty keen rambler. You’ll be covering 136 miles so make sure you’re prepared. However, even though you’ll be walking quite a distance, much of the going is smooth and along the valley, so you don’t need to worry too much about hills. The holiday also includes a rest day in Hay-on-Wye where you can recharge your batteries and browse the bookshops. All things told, this is a really rewarding holiday - and if you’ve got the stamina and the will, you’ll have an amazing time.
