Horse Riding in Utah’s Capitol Reef National Park

Capitol Reef National Park

This six-day guided tour takes you right into the heart of the Capitol Reef National Park in Utah. Spend the first night in Torrey and then the rest at a deluxe base-camp deep in the backcountry. From horseback, you’ll see slot canyons, rock arches and ancient rock and more than your fair share of awe-inspiring wilderness.

Capitol Reef National Park in Utah stretches across 378 square miles of breath-taking landscape. Canyons, ridges, buttes and monoliths all gild this epic wilderness. Every hue imaginable of earth tones can be found here – from rust-coloured rocks that spiral upwards to buttermilk natural arches that frame skies of cobalt blue. And it’s not just geologists who’ll find themselves speechless at the layer-upon-layer of sediments that date back 300 million years - the sheer expanse and amount of rocky colour that spread across this place, is impressive to all and have earned it the nickname of the “Land of the Sleeping Rainbow”.

On this six-day guided tour you’ll explore some of the best bits this huge National Park has to offer. You’ll be based at a deluxe base-camp deep in the backcountry, so each day you can get straight out into the wilderness and explore somewhere new. Gaze in wonder at Cathedral Valley – where huge red rocks soar upwards like a steeple. See the Golden Throne – a craggy sandy-coloured rock that juts upwards like a crown, and check out Pleasant Creek Gorge, where water flows past creamy Navajo sandstone.

You don’t need to have any previous riding experience to enjoy this tour, but it is strongly recommended you get some lessons and saddle time prior to departure for your comfort level around horses and to assure your ability to enjoy every facet of the trip. The minimum age is eight years old – but kids need to be prepared for the physical demands of this tour. That said, the real prerequisites for enjoying this trip are a love of horses and the outdoors, and a willingness to join in as you’ll be in a group with a maximum number of 10 or 12 people – depending on your destination. Also, if you don’t want to spend every day on horseback, the team are happy to help you combine day’s hiking on this tour, too.
