This six-day guided horse-riding tour takes you into the heart of Utah’s High Plateaus. You’ll explore these rugged, colourful tablelands that stretch for hundreds of miles, and spend time relaxing in a deluxe base-camp set deep in the backcountry
The Colorado Plateau certainly doesn’t do things by halves – this place is big. Seriously big. In fact, it runs all the way from the Rocky Mountains to the Gulf of California and swallows up most of Utah, Colorado, New Mexico and Arizona in between. It’s little wonder therefore, that it was the last part of the United States to be explored. It’s a rugged, unforgiving landscape that spreads for miles on end. And here, the saying ‘I could see for miles’ really does hold true – on a clear day, and if you’re eyesight’s good enough, views that stretch for a whopping 200 miles aren’t uncommon.
On this six-day tour you’ll explore the plateau tops and canyons where the San Rafael Swell, the Capitol ReefNational Park and the Grand Staircase cast themselves off towards the Colorado River. You’ll trek on horseback into alpine wilderness, through Ponderosa pines to find picture-perfect, hidden-away lakes and hopefully spot a few of the natives – elk, deer, chipmunks and wild turkeys to name a few. Evenings, meanwhile, are given way to relaxing and reflecting at base-camp over hearty, tasty meals that will set you up for your next day of exploring.
You don’t need to have any previous riding experience to enjoy this tour, but it is strongly recommended you you get some lessons and saddle time prior to departure for your comfort level around horses and to assure your ability to enjoy every facet of the trip. The minimum age is eight years old – but kids need to be prepared for the physical demands of this tour. That said, the real prerequisites for enjoying this trip are a love of horses and the outdoors, and a willingness to join in as you’ll be in a group with a maximum number of 10 or 12 people – depending on your destination.
