Get out of the city and into the country on a horse riding weekend break in the Wiltshire countryside. Relaxed farmhouse accommodation, great home-cooking, and an away-from-it-all village location make this a ready-made getaway for horse and nature lovers.
Wiltshire, with its vast downs and cavernous valleys makes for great riding territory. Country lanes, bordered by wildflowers, snake their way through idyllic countryside where time seems to have all but stood still. The Cunetio stables themselves are nestled next to an ancient Saxon church in Mildenhall – a village that dates back to Roman times - and there’s more to be seen when you’re out on horseback. Discover the Valley of the Stones – a primeval site where stones for Avebury and Stonehenge were sourced, canter along seemingly endless bridleways, and then stop at a watering hole for a sip of the local tipple.
With ride leader Mick as your guide you’ll waste no time finding the best places to go on a weekend’s riding – he’s Wiltshire born and bred so he knows this part of the country like the back of his hand. Take a canter out across the Downs and over to Barbury Castle where you can tie up your horse in the paddock and stop for tea and cake – or explore Fyfield Down, the oldest natural landscape in Europe.
Both horseriders and non riders can be catered for so if you have a non riding partner they are more than welcome. Riders need to be competent, at all paces and comfortable in the saddle for several hours. The rides are often fast and you will need to be fit to really enjoy pace. .
Non-riders meanwhile can use the accommodation as a base and spend the days exploring the countryside. For those wanting a walking break, a personal guide will provide an escort service and cyclists are offered exciting and interesting routes to follow.
Great riding, great companions and fabulous trails with very little road work. A glorious weekend, where we arrived as strangers and left as friends.
I would recommend this to others, but they do need to be able to ride its not a novice yard.
