Enjoy a six day trek through the mesmerising moonscape of the Tabernas Desert, Almeria. This area is a haven for wildlife and the backdrop to countless movies, from bygone Spaghetti Westerns to classic Indiana Jones.
The setting for countless cinematic gems, from "A Fistful of Dollars" and "The Good, The Bad and The Ugly", to "Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark" and "Lawrence of Arabia", the gnarled badlands of the Tabernas Desert can easily be mistaken for North Africa. The region is scored with meandering paths that weave between towering dunes and swollen canyons. An ideal location for your own adventure.
Your expert guides will give you the lowdown on the history, flora and fauna of this unique and dramatic landscape, widely considered to be Europe’s only “true” desert, while you enjoy a picnic lunch in a shady oasis. You’ll spot swifts, sandgrouses and cheeky jackdaws as you explore the surprisingly lush valley floors, and if you start bright and early you might encounter hedgehogs and owls too. As well as the natural wildlife of the area you will have the chance to explore the Tabernas' mini-Hollywood. This region has a long history as a prime film location, and has contributed to the making of hundreds of icons of the silver screen, from Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton to Sean Connery and Brigitte Bardo. Whatever you're looking for in a desert trek, the Tabernas rarely disappoints!
Tabernas treks require stamina as you will be completing five to seven hours of walking each day. The route is largely off the beaten tracks and terrain can be rocky. There are no real altitudes with maximum ascents being around 800m. Expect to work up a sweat and don't rule out the odd scratch or scrape. But if you ask us it’s definitely worth it; after all, you never heard Clint or Indie complaining!
