Once described as the loneliest river in America, the Owyhee is almost unparalleled for its remoteness and barren beauty. This five-day rafting in Oregon trip follows the course of the Lower Owyhee as it waves past sandy beaches, hot springs and desert canyons with thousand foot walls!
America’s wild north-west is a paradise for lovers of the very great outdoors! Between them, Northern California and Oregon are home to every imaginable landscape, from lush rainforest to barren desert, sweeping beaches to lofty mountains. The raw beauty of the environment is matched only by its sheer immensity; among the superlative sites are Crater Lake (the deepest in the U.S.), the Columbia river (one of the largest in North America) and Mount Hood (one of the States’ most prominent peaks). There are towering Douglas Firs and redwoods (the world’s biggest trees) and, to trump them all, the world’s largest single organism, the 600 ton, 2,400 year old Armillaria ostoyae fungus beneath the Malheur National Forest! Given this awesome setting, it should come as no surprise to learn that the region features some of the best hiking, mountaineering and, most importantly, rafting that America has to offer!
The white water on this trip is rated as class 3 which is more mellow white water, so this trip is definitely about the area with the emphasis on good food, stunning scenery and rest and relaxation. You don’t need any experience to enjoy this trip, but it helps if you’re an adventurous, open-minded type. And of course, you’ll be spending several hours a day in the raft with a bunch of other people, so if you’re not one for socialising this might not be the holiday for you. One final caution: you will get wet! Children are welcome on this trip, with a minimum age of 10.
I have to start my review with the gorgonzola butter I watched our guides prepare by hand. We ate it with our steak, but I wasn't about to end there. It was good on the fish from our mixed grill dinner, it went excellent (oddly enough) with our chocolate fondue, and my favorite was on the apple slices. But then again, every meal with Momentum was a grand experience and delicious. Maybe it was the crisp Spring air, all that big sky, the towering cliffs we rafted through that made me so hungry! And after the gorgonzola butter, it would have to be the hot springs that made me happiest. No, wait! It was the guides, who were funny, kind, and for macho river folk, ridiculously nurturing and always there to take care of any extra needs I had and to answer my millions of natural history questions (Thanks, Glenn and Anthony!). But actually, the canyon itself was the highlight, and the hieroglyphs, and the hike. Is there a word limit on this review? There's just so many wonderful things to say about my Momentum Rafting trip!
