California Rafting - The Salmon River

Rafting in California - aerial view

Little-known even in its home state, the California Salmon River is nonetheless one of America’s best whitewater rafting runs. Featuring world-class rapids, cascading falls and spectacular granite gorge scenery, the ‘Cal Salmon’ has it all - this three- or four-day tour takes you there!

America’s wild north-west is a paradise for lovers of the very great outdoors! Between them, Northern California and Oregon are home to every imaginable landscape, from lush rainforest to barren desert, sweeping beaches to lofty mountains. The raw beauty of the environment is matched only by its sheer immensity; among the superlative sites are Crater Lake (the deepest in the U.S.), the Columbia river (one of the largest in North America) and Mount Hood (one of the States’ most prominent peaks). There are towering Douglas Firs and redwoods (the world’s biggest trees) and, to trump them all, the world’s largest single organism, the 600 ton, 2,400 year old Armillaria ostoyae fungus beneath the Malheur National Forest! Given this awesome setting, it should come as no surprise to learn that the region features some of the best hiking, mountaineering and, most importantly, rafting that America has to offer!

Spend three- or four-days rafting in California on the Salmon River and enjoy pure fun and adventure. The lower sections of the river are ten a penny with chunky Class III, IV and IV+ rapids, cascading waterfalls and emerald-green side streams, and then there’s the Class V Nordheimer section, featuring some of the most incredible whitewater to be found anywhere! You’ll also have the chance to explore some the Cal Salmon’s hidden gems, like the Class V Scott River or the breathtakingly beautiful Clear Creek (accessed by kayak). All this in the majestic wilds of North California, where deer, brown bear and even mountain lions are not uncommon sightings!

The California Salmon River rafting tour is only for the adventurous! This is a wild river with some unbelievable whitewater, but you’re going to have to be in good shape if you want ride it. The trip is best suited to experienced rafters, though beginners can have a go too if they’re physically fit and used to adrenalin sports. However, you may be asked to participate in a Class V paddler’s test before attempting some of the fiercest sections of river. Bear in mind that on this tour you’ll be spending several hours a day in the raft with a bunch of other people, so if you’re not one for socialising you might not take to rafting. You can also expect to work up a sweat and times and, needless to say, you will get wet!

The minimum age for this trip is 16.

Reviews of this experience

  1. We had a blast. What a great white water trip! Amazing pristine scenery, great food and lots of big exciting rapids. You and the Momentum crew were awesome. It was the best food of any river trip I have been on, especially your special french toast I LOVED IT! What really stood out above all was your commitment to safety. The river was BIG and all the measures you had in place to make us feel safe made the trip that much more fun. Keep up the good work (play).
